How To Apply For A PAN?

The procedure of applying for a PAN is very easy and simple and it has been kept so by the Income Tax Department for the convenience of the PAN applicants. To apply for a PAN card one is required to submit Application Form No 49A. The application form can be downloaded from the official website of the UTI Investor Services Ltd. The UTI Investor Services Ltd is the agency responsible for managing IT PAN services centers. The form can also be printed or photocopied or can be taken through any other source or from IT PAN Service Centers and TIN Facilitation Centers.

The other requirements along with the application form include a stamp size coloured photograph, an identity proof and an address proof. One also requires to write the designation and code of the concerned Assessing officer of the Income Tax Department on the Form 49A for PAN card. After completing all the requirements the applicant has to submit the form at an IT PAN Service Centre or at a TIN Facilitation Centre along with the requested fee.

Do’s And Don’t’s While Filling Application For A New PAN Card

Do’s

  1. One should always use a Form 49A to apply for a PAN card.
  2. One should remember to use a black ink pen to fill the application form. The form should be filled in English and in block letters.
  3. The applicant should fix a colour photograph of size 3.5 cm X 2.5 cm)
  4. The applicant is required to make the signature within the provided box in the form
  5. In case the person uses a thumb impression then it has to be attested by Magistrate or a Notay Public or a Gazetted Officer, with an official seal and stamp.
  6. The applicant must provide AO code in the PAN application form.
  7. An Identity Proof (POI) and an Address Proof (POA) should be attached as per Rule 114 (4) of rules of the Income Tax, 1962.

Don’ts

  1. There should be overwriting or corrections on the application form.
  2. The signature should be within the box and not across the box.
  3. The POI and POA not in the name of applicant should not be given in the form.
  4. Husband’s name should not be written in the Father’s name column.
  5. One should never place an application for a new PAN card while having one already.
